Noarlunga Downs Wetland Trail

The Noarlunga Downs Wetland Trail runs past a chain of stormwater wetland pools off River Road, inside the Onkaparinga River park area. It is flat, gravel and suited to prams and wheelchairs, and dogs are welcome on a lead.

Lead rules

National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia manages the trail. Dogs must stay on lead, which matters here because the path skirts the edge of a predator-free sanctuary.

The walk

The compacted gravel is easy going. Expect pelicans and other waterbirds on the pools and views of the Onkaparinga River.

Native trees shade parts of the route, but open sections are in full sun. Water for dogs is scarce on the trail, so carry a bottle and bowl.

Getting started

Park at the Gate 12 car park on River Road or at nearby A.S. Perry Reserve, which also has bins.

Max: Keep the lead short near the sanctuary fence. Birds are the whole point of this place.

Pair it with

Drive down to Christies Beach for a coffee at Bubbly Tea and Coffee Co.

Flat and even, it suits senior dogs and slow sniffers. Mornings are best for birdlife and shade.
