Nelshaby Reserve Walking Trails

A gentle 2.3-kilometre loop at Nelshaby Reserve circles the remains of an 1879 reservoir, with river red gums close by and long views to the Southern Flinders Ranges and Spencer Gulf. Dogs are welcome on a lead, and the flat track suits almost any dog.

Lead rules

Keep dogs on a lead for the whole loop. The reserve sits under Port Pirie Regional Council, and the rule for its reserves is on-lead and under effective control.

The walk

The track is formed earth and gravel, well kept and fairly flat, and it is wheelchair and pram friendly. It is set up as a story walk, telling the history of the old water supply as you go.

Tree cover is thin around the old reservoir site, so much of the loop is in the open.

Getting started

The loop starts from the Lawrie Park camping area, where dirt and grass parking suits cars and vans. Lawrie Park also has drinking water, bins, toilets, picnic tables and covered shelters.

Max: The reservoir loop is exposed in places. Fill a bottle at Lawrie Park and carry a bowl for the dog.

When to go

Cooler months and early mornings are best, given how open the track is. It is an easy, low-impact walk for older dogs, with shade and water waiting back at the start.
