Travelway Motel

Travelway Motel is a ground-level motel at 149 Gertrude Street in Port Pirie, and one of the town's reliable pet-friendly stays. For anyone driving the Flinders Ranges or upper Yorke Peninsula route with a dog in the car, it works as a practical overnight base in a town that has few options for travellers who will not leave the dog behind.

Bringing your dog

Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement, in designated rooms. Flag it when you book so staff can allocate a pet-friendly room, and expect a fee of around $30 for the first night. Dogs should not be left unattended in the room, and staff ask that you keep them under control around other guests.

Max: confirm the pet-friendly room and the current fee when you book, not on arrival. Turning up unannounced with a dog risks being told there is no pet room left that night.

The rooms

The units are single storey, so there are no stairs or lifts to manage with a lead in one hand and bags in the other, which suits older or anxious dogs. The motel has a licensed restaurant (closed Sundays), a guest barbecue area, a swimming pool for humans, free parking outside the units and a laundry. Bring your own dog bed, bowls and food, as none of it is supplied.

Getting there

The motel sits on Gertrude Street, Port Pirie's main north-south drag, with free parking directly outside the rooms. It is an easy detour off the Augusta Highway for anyone breaking the trip between Adelaide and the Southern Flinders.

While you're out there

The Port Pirie foreshore is the local walking pick, popular for on-lead strolls with water views, and there are parks around town for a stretch of the legs. Check signage before any off-lead time, as rules vary by reserve.
