Narrabundah Hill Reserve

Narrabundah Hill is one of the few Canberra hill walks where dogs can come off lead for much of the way. The catch is cattle. When they are grazing the reserve, leads go back on.

Lead rules

The reserve sits at the western end of Weston Creek and is managed by the ACT Government through Transport Canberra and City Services. Dogs may be off lead under effective control, but must be leashed whenever cattle are present.

Check the paddocks and signs at the gate before you unclip.

The walk

The circuit runs about 5.5 kilometres on unsealed fire trails and dirt tracks. It is moderately challenging and climbs through native woodland and pines.

The payoff is a wide view across Canberra to the Brindabella Ranges. Parts of the ridge are exposed, with only patchy shade from the trees.

Max: No taps and almost no bins up there. Carry water for both of you and pack the bags out to the car.

Make a day of it

Park for free near the access points off Eucumbene Drive in Duffy. Afterwards, The Handlebar at Stromlo is a short drive, or let a young dog burn off the rest at Weston Creek Dog Park.

This one suits fit, reliable dogs with good recall. Go early on warm days, before the exposed ridge heats up.
