Shiraz Trail

Between McLaren Vale and Willunga, the Shiraz Trail follows the old railway line through vineyards as the southern section of the Coast to Vines Rail Trail. It is sealed, flat and on lead the whole way.

Lead rules

The City of Onkaparinga requires dogs on lead at all times on this shared-use path. Cyclists use it too, so keep the lead short when bikes pass.

The walk

Smooth bitumen makes it easy on older joints and fine for prams. You pass rolling vineyards, railway remnants and tall wild olive trees, crossing Tatachilla on the way through.

Shade comes and goes under eucalypts and roadside trees, but long stretches run open beside the vines.

Pepsi: Taps are closer to the towns than to the open corridor, so pack water and a bowl for the middle stretch.

Getting started

There is parking at access points along the corridor, including near Tatachilla Road and at the Willunga end on Railway Terrace. Bins sit at the main access points and trailheads.

Make a day of it

Finish in McLaren Vale with a coffee at Dal Mare Coffee Roastery or a meal at the McLaren Vale Hotel.

When to go

The exposed sections get hot on summer afternoons, so start early. The flat surface suits older dogs and long, steady walks.
