John Miller Reserve

John Miller Reserve fronts the Esplanade at Somerton Park, a manicured lawn and playground with open views over Gulf St Vincent and the coastal path running past. Dogs are welcome on lead.

Lead rules

The City of Holdfast Bay requires dogs to be on lead in the reserve and its public spaces. If you step down onto the beach, seasonal and time-of-day rules apply there, so check the council signs first.

The walk

The reserve's sealed paths join the coastal path, which makes it a handy rest stop on a longer walk between Glenelg and Brighton. A dog bag dispenser is on site.

There is a drinking fountain suitable for filling a bowl, bins nearby, and shaded shelters, benches and trees. Parking is on the street along the Esplanade, and there are accessible toilets and an outdoor gym.

Make a day of it

Pav’s Cafe and Summertown Studio are both nearby in Somerton Park for a coffee.

When to go

Summer mornings are the pick, before the sun is high over the open lawn. It suits dogs who enjoy a sociable coastal stroll.
