James Oates Reserve

James Oates Reserve sits at the mouth of the Minnamurra River on Charles Avenue, beside the boat ramp, with wide views up the estuary. Dogs are welcome on lead, but the river itself is off-limits to them.

The river is off-limits

Max: The water is right there and the rules say no. Keep the lead short near the shoreline and skip the stretch towards Rangoon Reserve.

Kiama Municipal Council requires dogs on lead in the reserve. They are banned from the Minnamurra River water areas and from the reserve land between James Oates and Rangoon Reserves.

Stay at least 10 metres from the playground equipment and the barbecue and food areas.

Facilities

The reserve has grass, concrete walkways, shade trees and shelters, bins, toilets, showers and picnic tables. Free parking sits next to the boat ramp.

There is no dedicated dog water, so bring your own.

Make a day of it

The reserve marks the northern start of the Kiama Coast Walk, and Minnamurra General Store & Cafe is handy for a coffee.

For an off-lead run, the Minnamurra Headland off-leash area off Eureka Avenue has a water tap and bins.

When to go

Boats come and go from the ramp and birds feed on the river flats, so this suits a calm dog on a short lead. Pair it with the headland if yours needs a proper run.
