Harrington Lake Walk

Harrington Lake Walk is a paved loop of roughly 2.2km around Harrington Park Lake in Sydney's Macarthur region, and it is the local dog-walking circuit by design: flat, leash-only, and popular with residents who use it daily. Water views, native birds and landscaped parkland make it a far nicer lap than the distance suggests.

Leash status

Dogs must stay on leash at all times around the lake. Pick up after your dog using the bins along the path, and keep them under control near the water: the lake's swans are territorial and large enough to intimidate a dog on a narrow section of path. Keep the lead short when passing close to the shoreline and do not let your dog lunge or bark at the birds.

The walk

The loop is fully paved, flat the entire way, and takes about half an hour at an easy pace, which makes it workable for dogs of any fitness level plus prams and wheelchairs. Covered picnic tables, electric barbecues, a children's playground and outdoor fitness stations line the route, so the circuit doubles as a family morning with the dog in tow. Shade is limited in a few sections on hot summer days.

Pepsi: give the swans a wide berth at the northern shallows. They own that stretch and they know it.

Getting there and parking

Drive via Camden Valley Way and turn into Harrington Parkway; parking sits at the lots off Charker Drive and Royal George Drive, with surrounding residential streets as overflow. The closest train stations are Campbelltown and Macarthur, with local buses running along Camden Valley Way and a short walk into the suburb.

When to go and what is nearby

Early mornings before 8am and mid-week lunchtimes are the quietest windows; weekend mornings and late weekday afternoons draw the after-work crowd. The path can hold standing water after heavy rain, so pick a dry day for an easy lap. For an off-lead run, Narellan Leash Free Park is the nearest fenced option, with Sidewalk Society in Narellan covering the dog-friendly coffee stop afterwards.
