Coonong Creek Reserve

What locals call the Gymea Bay foreshore walk is the track through Coonong Creek Reserve, dropping from Old School Park through bushland to the edge of the bay. Dogs are welcome on a lead on the reserve paths, but not at the baths.

Lead rules

Sutherland Shire Council allows dogs on a lead through Coonong Creek Reserve. They are prohibited in Gymea Bay Baths Reserve around the tidal pool.

The baths reserve is also closed for reconstruction through early 2027, while the creek tracks stay open.

The walk

Concrete near the park end gives way to dirt bush track, uneven ground and stone and timber stairs closer to the creek and foreshore.

The creek winds through remnant bushland, gums and rocky outcrops before it opens onto the tidal baths and the water of Gymea Bay. Tree cover along parts of the route keeps it cooler in the warmer months.

Max: The stairs near the creek are uneven. Shorten the lead and take them slowly, especially on the way back up.

Make a day of it

Street parking gives several ways in, and the shops on Gymea Bay Road are close. Try Rock Paper Coffee for a coffee, or the Gymea Hotel later in the day.

Who it suits

Sure-footed dogs that enjoy a bit of bush. The stairs and rough sections make it harder going for older dogs.
