Themeda Circuit – Circuit C, Burnside Walks - Start

Themeda Circuit - Circuit C, Burnside Walks is a 3.6 km loop trail in Mount Osmond Reserve, Glen Osmond, South Australia. The defining feature is a steep switchback climb up the hillside that rewards you with sweeping panoramic views across the Adelaide plains, city, and coastline. If you want a short, sharp climb with a big visual payoff and you are happy keeping your dog on-leash, this is your trail.

The walk. The loop runs roughly 3.6 to 3.7 km over moderate to steep terrain. It is a single-track walking trail with switchbacks climbing the hill, and the surface can get muddy and slippery on the clay sections after rain. There is little shade on the exposed ridge, which makes a real difference to your dog's comfort in an Adelaide summer.

Leash status. Dogs must be on-leash at a maximum of 2 metres in this City of Burnside reserve. It is not a designated off-leash area, and because this is a native Themeda grassland reserve, dogs need to stay on the path.

Water. No water fountains or taps on the trail. Carry enough water for yourself and your dog, especially on warm days when the ridge offers no cover.

Hazards. The trail is shared with cyclists in places, so keep dogs under close control, particularly around blind corners on the switchbacks. There are no bins on the trail, so carry out your own waste bags.

Getting there. Trailhead is at 12 Hayward Drive, Mount Osmond. Parking is limited and informal along the roadside, and it fills up on weekends and sunny afternoons. Public transport is not practical, the nearest Adelaide Metro stop is on Dashwood Road in Beaumont and still requires a walk to reach the trailhead.

Nearby with the dogs. The sister trail Mount Osmond Reserve (Beaumont Circuit, Circuit D) sits on the other side of the ridge and can be combined into a longer walk for experienced hikers. For an off-leash run after the climb, Myrtle Bank Dog Park is a short drive away.

When to go. Weekday mornings are ideal, you avoid the weekend crowding and the worst of the heat on those exposed ridge sections. Good for fit walkers with steady, on-leash dogs who handle switchbacks and shared trails without fuss.
