George Reserve

George Reserve sits on the water at Salamander Bay, looking across Port Stephens to the Tomaree and Yacaaba headlands. It is a council on-lead dog exercise area, so this is a scenic stroll rather than a run.

Lead rules

Port Stephens Council requires dogs to stay on a lead across the reserve and its formal paths.

The walk

Flat concrete and asphalt paths run past grassed and landscaped areas, picnic spots and a playground, with access down to the beach. The layout suits owners with limited mobility and senior dogs.

Undercover picnic tables and established trees give pockets of shade.

Water and facilities

The upgraded amenities block has outdoor showers for rinsing off sand, and bins are spread through the reserve. Bring drinking water and a bowl for the dog.

Parking is on site and along Soldiers Point Road.

For an off-lead run on the sand, Bagnalls Beach Off-Lead Dog Exercise Area is nearby in Nelson Bay.

When to go

Come for the view in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon. The flat, easy paths make it a good outing for older dogs.
