Bagnalls Beach Off-Lead Dog Exercise Area

Bagnalls Beach is Nelson Bay's marquee off-leash spot: a calm, shallow bayside beach on Government Road between Nelson Bay and Corlette, backed by a grassed reserve with full facilities. The headline fact is the access, because dogs are off-leash here around the clock on both the sand and the reserve.

Leash status

Port Stephens Council lists Bagnalls Beach Reserve as a 24 hour off-leash dog exercise area, with dogs under effective control at all times. The zone covers the beach and the adjoining reserve, but it stops at the boundaries: dogs are not permitted on Corlette Beach to the west or Dutchmans Beach to the east, so watch the ends if your dog roams. The area is completely unfenced and opens onto the street, so recall matters. Carry your own bags, as there is no dispenser on site.

Water and terrain

The bay is calm and shallow, better for paddling and wading than surf play. Tide state matters more than weather here: at high tide the sand strip narrows to almost nothing, while low tide opens up a much bigger beach for fetch and running. Check the tide chart before you commit to a long session.

Max: at high tide there is barely a strip of sand left, and this beach is unfenced right onto the road. Check the tide time first and keep an eye on the boundary at both ends.

Getting there and parking

Bagnalls Beach sits on Government Road on the main route between Nelson Bay and Corlette, with a large free car park on site. It also connects to the Bartlett Cycleway, so it is an easy walk or ride of about 1.5 to 2 kilometres from the Nelson Bay CBD and marina.

Worth knowing

The reserve behind the beach is the reason to linger: picnic tables, free electric barbecues, a playground, public toilets including an accessible option, water taps and a rinse-off shower for sandy dogs.

When to go

Go early morning or late afternoon if you want space. Weekends and summer holidays get busy with dogs and owners, and low tide is when there is the most room to run and swim.
