Bagnalls Beach Off-Lead Dog Exercise Area

Bagnalls Beach is Nelson Bay's marquee off-leash spot, a calm, shallow bayside beach on Government Road between Nelson Bay and Corlette, with a shaded grass reserve behind it. Dogs get 24-hour off-leash access on both the sand and the reserve, which is the single fact that makes this one worth the drive.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted around the clock on the beach and the adjoining reserve, but dogs must stay under effective control at all times. The off-leash zone runs from the eastern to the western end of Bagnalls Beach itself; dogs are not permitted on Corlette Beach to the west or Dutchmans Beach to the east, so watch the boundary if your dog likes to roam. The area is completely unfenced, opening straight onto the reserve and street, so recall matters here.

What's there. The reserve has picnic tables, free electric barbecues, a playground, and public toilets including an accessible option. There are water taps and a rinse-off shower for sandy dogs, but no dog-waste bag dispenser on site, so bring your own bags.

Getting there. Bagnalls Beach sits on Government Road on the main route between Nelson Bay and Corlette, with a large free car park right on site. It also connects to the Bartlett Cycleway, so it is an easy walk or ride of around 1.5 to 2 kilometres from the Nelson Bay CBD and marina.

The water. Expect calm, shallow bay water, good for a paddle rather than surf. Check the tide before you go: at high tide the sand strip narrows right down, leaving little room to run, while low tide opens up a much bigger beach.

Nearby with the dogs. The Nelson Bay township is a short drive away and has a handful of dog-friendly cafes with outdoor seating, plus pet-friendly holiday rentals and caravan parks around Nelson Bay and Corlette.

Go early morning or late afternoon if you want the beach to yourselves. It gets busy with dogs and owners on weekends and through summer, and low tide is when there is the most room to run and swim.
