Nelson Bay Off-Lead Dog Exercise Area is the fenced dog park at Austral Street Reserve, a short walk from the Nelson Bay town centre. It is not a beach, so there is no tide to plan around, just a secure, grassed oval where dogs can run off-leash without worrying about traffic or open boundaries.
The rules. Dogs must be leashed to walk into and out of the fenced area, then can run off-leash once inside, under effective voice control at all times. Declared dangerous or restricted dogs are not permitted off-leash here. Owners are responsible for picking up after their dogs; bags and bins are generally provided, but it is worth carrying your own as backup.
What's there. The area is fully fenced with an open, grassed oval roughly the size of a football field, bench seating for owners, and partial shade from surrounding trees. Some visitors have noted bindii weeds on the grass at times, which can bother sensitive paws, so check your dog's feet after a run. Bring your own water bowl, since on-site water is not guaranteed.
Getting there. The reserve is on Austral Street, Nelson Bay, within walking distance of the town centre, with free street parking along Austral Street. It is a straightforward stop if you are already in town rather than a destination to drive out to.
Nearby with the dogs. Nelson Bay's marina precinct has several cafes with dog-friendly outdoor seating, and the town has a range of pet-friendly holiday rentals and apartments if you are staying nearby.
Early mornings before 9am and late afternoons are the quietest times to visit; weekends and school holidays draw the most dogs around the middle of the day. Good option for a quick, contained run when Bagnalls Beach is too far out of the way or too crowded.
