Nelson Bay Off-Lead Dog Exercise Area

Despite the name, the Nelson Bay Off-Lead Dog Exercise Area is not on the sand: it is the fenced off-lead field at 5 Austral Street, a short walk from the Nelson Bay town centre. Port Stephens Council declares it a dog exercise area, and the practical draw is simple: a secure, grassed oval roughly the size of a football field where dogs can run off-lead without traffic or open boundaries.

Leash status

Lead your dog in and out through the fenced entry, then it is off-lead inside under effective voice control at all times. Council's default rule applies everywhere else in Nelson Bay: any reserve, park or beach that is not a signed off-lead area is strictly on-lead. Declared dangerous and restricted dogs are not permitted, and owners are responsible for picking up; bags and bins are usually provided but carry your own as backup.

The dog setup

The field is fully fenced with open turf, bench seating along the edge and partial shade from surrounding trees. Bring your own water bowl, since on-site water is not guaranteed. In the warmer months, bindii weeds can pop up through the grass and bother sensitive paws, so check your dog's feet after a run and pick your season for ground-level games.

Max: this is the quick, contained run when you are already in town. For an actual swim, Bagnalls Beach a few minutes away is the off-lead water option.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on Austral Street within walking distance of Nelson Bay's centre, with free street parking along the road. It works as a straightforward stop on a town visit rather than a drive-out destination, and the marina precinct with its dog-friendly cafe tables is close by.

When to go

Early mornings before 9am and late afternoons are the quiet windows; weekends and school holidays fill the middle of the day. The 24-hour access means an evening session under the lights of a clear night works too.
