Shoal Bay On-Lead Dog Exercise Area

Shoal Bay On-Lead Dog Exercise Area is a leashed walking zone on the foreshore at 72 Ronald Avenue, Shoal Bay, managed by Port Stephens Council. The draw is simple: it is one of the few legal stretches where dogs can join you on the sand, with views over the bay and Tomaree Head, as long as the lead stays on.

The dog setup

Dogs must stay on an adequate lead or chain for the whole visit; there is no off-lead window anywhere inside this designated on-lead zone. Up to four dogs per person are allowed, and rangers patrol the area and can fine anyone ignoring signage or leaving waste behind.

The eastern end of the adjacent beach, from the boat ramp to Tomaree Lodge, allows off-lead exercise between 5pm and 9am, so watch the signs marking where one zone ends and the other begins. Waste bags and bins are provided, and a paved foreshore walkway with bench seating runs along the beach with direct sand access.

Max: the on-lead and off-lead zones sit right next to each other here. A few metres in the wrong direction with a lead off is exactly the kind of thing that earns a fine.

Worth knowing

Tide shapes the visit more than anything: low tide widens the beach and gives you room along the water, while high tide pushes usable space back to the paved path. Dogs are prohibited in the nearby National Park and on the main prohibited beach sections, so keep the walk inside the signed area.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Shoal Bay Road or Ronald Avenue. Parking exists nearby but tightens badly over summer and public holidays, when the Ronald Avenue side streets are the practical fallback. Buses run along Shoal Bay Road, and the coastal path from Nelson Bay takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes on foot.
