Barney’s Pond

Barney's Pond is a natural, unfenced swimming spot for dogs inside Rainbow Forest Park in Fig Tree Pocket, a rustic bushland pocket rather than a manicured park. It is a genuine local favourite for a paddle away from the crowds.

The walk. An easy loop trail winds around the pond through bushland, giving owners a proper walk while dogs swim and explore. Expect natural surfaces, not pavement.

Leash status. Off-leash is permitted, but Brisbane City Council requires dogs to be under effective control and return on command, since the area is unfenced and sits close to the road and natural bushland.

Water. The main drawcard: a freshwater pond dogs can swim in. It is inland and not tide-affected, though levels can rise or drop after heavy rain, so check conditions if it has been wet.

Hazards. Unfenced and close to a road, so recall matters before you let a dog off-leash. It is a carry-in, carry-out area. Bag bins are not reliably supplied, so bring your own waste bags and take rubbish home.

Getting there. The entrance is off Jesmond Road, roughly opposite the Rainbow Forest Park signage. Street parking along Jesmond Road is the easiest option; the nearest bus stops are on Jesmond Road or Hourihan Road, but driving is by far the simplest way in.

When to go. Weekday mid-mornings to early afternoons are quietest; Sunday afternoons draw the biggest crowd. Good for confident swimmers and dogs that are solid on recall around an open, unfenced pond.
