Mount Peel Bushland

Mount Peel Bushland is a 123.5-hectare bushland reserve at Drayton on the southwest edge of Toowoomba. Its defining feature is a large on-leash trail network with scenic lookouts over the Darling Downs and Toowoomba.

The walk. A network of shared trails covers the reserve, spanning bushwalking, hiking and mountain bike tracks. Grades range from moderate to difficult, with signposted tracks on site to help you navigate. Scenic lookouts with seating offer resting points and sweeping views across the Darling Downs and back over Toowoomba.

Leash status. All domestic animals must be kept on a lead at all times. The reserve is home to kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and koalas, and the on-leash rules exist to protect both pets and wildlife from harmful encounters.

What's there. A gravel carpark sits off Boundary St South, with maps and signposted tracks at the site. Seating is provided at the lookouts. Water taps aren't confirmed on site, so bring your own water for the dog, especially on warmer days.

Hazards. Walkers share the trails with mountain bikers and horse riders. Cyclists can move quickly on shared tracks, so keep dogs on a short lead and stay alert. Kangaroos and other wildlife are more active at dawn and dusk. Stick to the designated trails at all times to protect sensitive habitat.

Getting there. From Toowoomba, head south via Anzac Avenue toward Drayton and turn right onto the slip road after the traffic lights at Canning St. Public transport to the site is limited, so driving is the practical option.

Nearby with the dogs. For an off-leash run after the trails, Theiss Dog Park in Darling Heights is a short drive away. If you need accommodation, both BIG4 Toowoomba Holiday Park in Harristown and Toowoomba Caravan Park in Kearneys Spring are pet-friendly options within easy reach.

When to go. Mid-morning on weekdays is the quietest window, while weekends and early mornings bring heavier foot and bike traffic. Wildlife is far more active at dawn and dusk, so time your walk accordingly. The moderate-to-difficult grades and extended trail network suit active dogs and owners who want a solid hill workout without leaving the city fringe.
