Clare Street Oval

A flat, grassy City of Hobart sportsground at 62 Clare Street, Clare Street Oval gives New Town dogs room to run off lead whenever the field is free.

When dogs can run

Dogs may be off lead on the oval when there is no organised sport, school use, council maintenance or booking. While any of those are on, dogs are not allowed on the sportsground at all.

The neighbouring Fairfield Playground is a strict no-dog zone, whatever the time.

Before you unclip, check the field

Max: Look for a school group, a booking or cricketers at the nets before you let go. If the ground is in use, it is closed to dogs.

The oval sits in a built-up pocket of New Town, so recall matters if something changes while your dog is out.

Shade, water and parking

Shade is limited to a few boundary trees, and the middle of the oval is fully exposed. There is no listed dog water, so pack a bowl.

A wheelchair-accessible car park serves the ground, and bins are on hand, though bringing your own bags is wise.

Make a day of it

Pick up a treat for yourself at Bam Cafe & Bakery in New Town, or add the Cornelian Bay foreshore for a longer outing.

When to go

Early mornings and evenings are the likeliest times to find the field empty. It suits dogs with reliable recall that you can call in quickly if a group turns up.
