Calwell - Beasley Loop

Short enough for a weekday evening, the Beasley Loop in Calwell starts on suburban footpaths and climbs onto a fire trail that wraps around Arthur Calwell Hill. Dogs stay on lead the whole way, under ACT Government rules for public paths.

The walk

Most people put the loop at roughly 1.5 to 1.7 kilometres, with a gentle rise of about 12 metres. You head out along a residential path, pick up the fire trail behind Beasley Street, then come back on a shared bike path.

Underfoot you get concrete, bitumen, a few stairs and a gravel track around the hill. The higher section looks out towards Tuggeranong Hill, and kangaroos are often seen in the bushland.

Lead rules

On ACT public paths and urban land, dogs must be on lead and under effective control, and that covers both the streets and the fire trail. Playgrounds are exclusion zones, so walk around them.

Before you head out on the fire trail

Max: Kangaroos graze close to the fire trail, so shorten the lead before you round the hill.

Bins and water are sparse on the fire trail section, so carry bags and water for the dog. Street parking near the residential entry points is the easiest way in.

Make a day of it

Save the longer tracks of Tuggeranong Hill Nature Reserve for a bigger day, or finish with a coffee at Coffee Guru Lanyon.

The short distance and small climb suit most dogs, including older ones that can manage a few stairs. It is a quick fix of bush smells without committing to a proper hike.
