Whipstick Loop Walk

Whipstick Loop Walk is a 6.1 km loop through Wombat State Forest near Blackwood, starting and finishing at Jack Cann Reserve. It is graded moderate, taking most walkers 1.5 to 2 hours, and the trail passes tree fern gullies, eucalypt forest and old gold mining relics on the way round.

The walk. The full loop runs 6.1 km and is rated moderate (grade 3), with an estimated time of 1.5 to 2 hours. Expect short, steep hills, some narrow sections and the odd fallen tree along the way, so it suits dogs and owners with a reasonable base level of fitness rather than a flat afternoon stroll.

The rules. Dogs are welcome on lead, and this has been confirmed with Forest Fire Management Victoria (DEECA), the land manager for this part of Wombat State Forest. Keep dogs leashed the whole way round, both to protect native wildlife and for safety near old mine shafts along the route. Some of these are steep and unfenced, though a few have fenced viewing platforms.

Hazards. The old mine shafts are the standout hazard here, so a lead is non-negotiable on this trail. After rain the gullies get slippery and muddy, so proper footwear helps for both you and your dog's paws. This is also a working state forest, so keep an eye out for management vehicles or logging activity.

Water. There is no on-trail water source mentioned, and no bins either, so carry water for your dog and pack out all waste bags.

Getting there. Jack Cann Reserve at 189 Simmons Reef Road has ample parking, along with picnic tables and public toilets at the start and finish. From Blackwood township, head west on Simmons Reef Road for about 2 km to reach the reserve. It is roughly 1.5 hours from Melbourne via the Western Highway, turning off at Myrniong or Greendale toward Blackwood, or about 40 minutes from Ballarat. Public transport is very limited out here, so a car is really the only practical option.

Nearby with the dogs. The Lerderderg Heritage River Walk is another dog-friendly trail nearby, and Blackwood Mineral Springs Caravan Park makes a handy base if you are staying overnight.

When to go. Weekdays are quieter than weekends and public holidays, and dry conditions make the gully sections far less slippery underfoot. Good for confident walkers with sure-footed dogs, less so after heavy rain.
