Lerderderg State Park

Lerderderg State Park is a big stretch of gorge country, but for dog owners it comes down to one corner: O'Briens Crossing, the only part where dogs are allowed, and only on a lead.

Where dogs can walk

Parks Victoria permits dogs on a lead at the O'Briens Crossing Day Visitor Area and on the connecting O'Briens Crossing Tunnel Walk.

They are banned elsewhere in the park, including Mackenzies Flat and the gorge circuit, to protect native wildlife.

The walk

Tracks are natural dirt and rock, uneven in places, following the Lerderderg River under tall gums. The canopy along the riverbanks and valley floor gives heavy shade.

This northern end is quieter than busy Mackenzies Flat, which makes for a calmer bushwalk.

Before you go

There is gravel parking and basic toilets at the day visitor area. Bins are limited, so pack out everything, including dog waste.

The river runs alongside, but there are no taps for dogs, so carry fresh drinking water.

Max: Check which end of the park you are driving to. Dogs are allowed at O'Briens Crossing, not at Mackenzies Flat.

When to go

The deep shade makes it a good warm-weather option. It suits steady walkers and dogs who are sure-footed on rough ground.
