Lerderderg Campground

Lerderderg Campground sits on Upper Chadwick Track in Lerderderg State Park, roughly 5km north of O'Briens Crossing. It is one of the few free, dog-friendly bush camping spots in the region, making it a straightforward base for anyone wanting rugged woodland camping with their dog along.

The rules. Dogs are permitted to stay overnight and there are no size or breed restrictions listed by Parks Victoria. Dogs must remain on-leash at all times within the camping area. They are generally allowed on tracks within the State Park, but are restricted from surrounding national parks and sensitive areas. Camping is free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no booking system.

What is there. This is remote, quiet bush camping with natural woodland surroundings. Facilities are basic: long-drop toilets, fire pits, and picnic tables. There are no designated sites. Bring your own drinking water and firewood, and take all rubbish home with you. Walking tracks meander through the forest, and Diggers Creek is nearby.

Getting there. The campground is accessible by conventional 2WD vehicles in dry conditions. 4WD is recommended or required during wet weather as roads can become muddy. Check for seasonal road closures before you set out. Park within the designated camping area near your spot.

Watch-outs. You must be fully self-sufficient for water and firewood. Local wildlife includes Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Swamp Wallabies, so keep dogs close to avoid disturbing animals. Wet-weather access can be challenging, and seasonal closures may apply.

Nearby with the dogs. O'Briens Crossing, a short drive south, has a picnic area with river access where dogs are welcome on-lead. For a supply run or a proper meal further afield, Little Lucky Cafe and Smokehouse 720 in Bacchus Marsh are practical options.

When to go. Aim for dry months when 2WD access is reliable and the tracks are not churned up. Check road conditions and seasonal closures before driving in, especially after rain. Arrive early on weekends and holidays, as sites are first-come, first-served and fill quickly.
