Anchorage Boardwalk

Built over the mangroves of Terranora Creek, the Anchorage Boardwalk is a quick waterside stroll that most dogs can knock over in about 20 minutes return. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on a lead the whole way.

Lead rules

Tweed Shire Council requires dogs to be on lead in public spaces unless an area is signed as an off-leash exercise area, and this boardwalk is not one. Keep the lead short on the narrower decking so bikes and walkers can pass.

Getting started

Start at Keith Curran Park on Island Drive, where there is parking and a grassy patch of foreshore. The boardwalk itself is fibreglass decking with aluminium rails, running through mangroves and under mature trees.

Shade comes and goes, with open stretches of boardwalk between the trees. At the far end, a grassy park with benches looks out over moored boats.

Around high tide the water near the start is good for a paddle. There are no dog bowls on the boardwalk and few bins, so bring water and pack out the bags.

Make a day of it

Boyd Family Park in Tweed Heads West is nearby, and Ichiyon cafe is handy for a coffee.

Short, flat and calm, this suits older dogs and a quick morning or afternoon stretch. Time it for high tide if your dog likes a dip.
