Wanngardi Caravan Park

Wanngardi Caravan Park is a small, quiet bush park on Ilparpa Road, about 15 minutes southwest of Alice Springs in White Gums. The defining detail for dog owners: it is strictly BYO caravan or tent, there are no cabins or on-site vans, and pets are permitted on powered and unpowered sites at manager’s discretion.

Dogs are allowed on caravan and tent sites only. They must be kept on a leash at all times around the park and cannot be left unattended. Owners must pick up after their pets. Because the park has no indoor accommodation, pets cannot be housed in non-camping facilities. Specific pet fees were not confirmed in the source material, so enquire directly before booking.

The park

A peaceful bush setting with views of the MacDonnell Ranges, geared toward self-sufficient travellers. Bore water is available at all powered sites, and the amenities block offers large individual shower and toilet rooms with hot showers. There is a camp kitchen and fire pits. Campfires are permitted when no fire bans are in place, and firewood is available for $20 cash.

Out and about

Local walking trails and quiet roads surround the park, but keep dogs leashed at all times. Wildlife and livestock are present in the area, and Conlon’s Lagoon and Roe Creek are nearby natural features. When to go

The park operates seasonally, opening 1 April and closing 24 September, so plan around those dates. Good for self-contained campers who want MacDonnell Ranges views without the caravan-park crowds.

Max: the leash rule is non-negotiable here, and they mean it. Livestock and wildlife around the park boundaries are a real distraction factor, so a solid recall is not a substitute for a physical lead. Do not plan on leaving your dog unattended either.
