Uhuru Chalets

Uhuru Chalets is a small self-contained property in a rural bush setting at 189 Railway Road, Torbay, just off the South Coast Highway roughly halfway between Albany and Denmark. There are two ways to stay: a two-bedroom chalet sleeping four, and the Wagon, a smaller one-bedroom option with a front deck built around couples. Well-behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement, at no charge.

Dogs at the Uhuru Chalets

Arrange the dog when you book rather than assuming. The rules are simple: your dog stays with you, is not left unattended in the chalet, and brings its own bed. Bowls should come too, as pet supplies are not provided. No size limit is published, only that dogs need to be well behaved, so confirm what that means for your dog when you arrange the stay. The property is bordered by a creek and open bush, which is the kind of ground where you want the dog in sight regardless.

The property

The grounds are quiet and open, and the setting is the reason people book: peaceful bush, strong birdlife, and dark skies a long way from town traffic. Guests consistently call out the comfortable beds, the cleanliness and the hosts. The Munda Biddi Track runs adjacent to the property, so there is leashed walking straight from the door, and the grounds themselves give a dog plenty of sniffing without leaving the site.

Getting there and out with the dog

Torbay is about 30 minutes west of Albany and 35 minutes east of Denmark, with on-site parking at the chalets. Cosy Corner beach is roughly a 10-minute drive and the closest saltwater fix: dogs are permitted there, on lead through the day-use and campground areas, with the longer beach stretches walked under effective control. Watch local signage for shorebird nesting boundaries. If you would rather camp beside the water, Cosy Corner Campground (East) is the City of Albany ground right at the beach.
