Torbay West camp ground

Torbay West camp ground, also known as Torbay Inlet or Floodgates campground, is a quiet nature-based site at the end of Torbay Inlet Road, about 25 km west of Albany. It sits between the inlet and the ocean beach, and it is one of the few camps on this stretch of the south coast where dogs are welcome. Around 24 unpowered sites take tents, caravans and camper trailers, and it is first come, first served with no booking system.

Dogs are allowed on site and are a normal part of the scene here, but they must stay on a leash at all times. The City of Albany caps any stay at 7 days and does not permit open fires anywhere on the ground. Bush ticks are common in the coastal scrub, so give your dog a thorough check after every walk along the inlet banks or through the peppermint trees.

The site

There are no designated bays, so pick a spot among the coastal scrub and peppermint trees when you arrive; locals recommend getting in early on busy weekends. Public toilets and an RV dump point are provided, but there are no showers. The water on site is non-potable, so carry enough drinking water for the dog as well as the humans. Mobile reception is limited to none, which is part of the appeal.

Getting there and paying

Access is via a gravel road at the end of Torbay Inlet Road, generally manageable in a 2WD driven carefully, though soft patches near the entry appear after rain. Fees are around $15 a night for two people, with a concession rate of $10, paid on site. Denmark is roughly 40 km west if you need supplies or a backup plan.

Close by with the dogs

Walking the inlet banks is the standard morning exercise, and Muttonbird Beach is a short drive away, though check local signage for dog restrictions before letting a dog off lead. In Torbay itself, Cosy Corner Campground (East) is the other low-cost option on this coast, and Kalgan River Caravan Park and Chalets is the powered-site alternative back toward Albany. The Luke Pen Walk makes a good leg-stretch on the drive in.

Max: the fee runs about $15 a night for two people and there is no fresh water on site, so pack enough for the dog as well as yourselves.
