Gaswork Cottages and B&B - Strathalbyn

Gasworks Cottages and B&B occupies a heritage-listed 1860s gasworks at 12 South Terrace in Strathalbyn, set back from the River Angas behind more than an acre of gardens. It is one of the few stays in town that takes dogs, and the combination of restored stone cottages, hosted breakfast and river walks straight out the gate makes it an easy pick for a Fleurieu weekend with the dog in tow.

Dogs stay by arrangement, and the Manager's Cottage is the one usually set aside for guests travelling with pets. A one-off pet fee of around $40 applies, so confirm the current figure when you book. Dogs are welcome inside the cottage while you are there, but the house rules keep them off the furniture, and every part of the arrangement is confirmed directly with the hosts rather than through an automated booking flow.

The property has its own resident dog and free-ranging chickens, which shapes the guest list more than any written policy. Calm, well-socialised dogs settle in fine; escape artists and chicken-chasers do not. There is a secure undercover outdoor area where you can leave a dog briefly, and the walled gardens give plenty of room for morning and evening leads-off time within the grounds, provided your dog stays under control around the resident animals.

The vibe

This is a hosted B&B with self-contained comforts rather than a hotel corridor. Guests come back for the gardens, the quiet and the hosts, and the cottages carry the industrial history lightly. Free on-site parking is included.

Getting there and around

Strathalbyn sits about an hour from Adelaide on the way to the Fleurieu Peninsula. The River Angas walking trail runs beside the property, and the town centre, its antique shops and the Soldiers Memorial Gardens are all an easy stroll. For lunch or dinner with the dog, the Robin Hood Hotel takes dogs at its footpath tables on High Street.
