The catch is simple: pet-friendly rooms are limited, so you book direct and confirm before you commit.

Dogs are welcome in a small number of designated apartments, and the property asks guests to contact reception directly to make sure one is free before booking. A daily pet fee of about AU$60 per night applies, with house rules to match: dogs must not be left unattended in the room at any time, and persistent barking, crying or whining is not permitted. Food and water bowls can be requested, and some rooms come with a private balcony or courtyard, which makes toilet breaks far easier than a corridor run.

Max: the no-unattended rule is the real test here. If your dog copes with you stepping out for dinner, this works. If not, plan your evenings around the room.

The vibe

The complex was refurbished recently, and guests point to comfortable beds, tidy layouts, fast wifi and free daily housekeeping. There is a communal BBQ area for dinners outdoors, discounted access to a 24 hour fitness centre, and the building has keyless hotel-style door locks. It is built for extended-stay travellers as much as holidaymakers, so the feel is quiet and residential rather than resort-like. Sale itself works as a base for the Gippsland Lakes without the lakeside price tag.

Getting there and parking

The address is 271 York Street, a couple of minutes off the Princes Highway route through Sale, with off-street parking on site. Sale has rail and coach connections from Melbourne and Traralgon, but with a dog in tow you will almost certainly drive, and the walkable position means you can leave the car parked for the length of your stay.
