RV Park Proserpine

RV Park Proserpine is a free, council-run camping area at 126 Main Street in Proserpine, right in the Whitsunday gateway town. It is a parking area for fully self-contained vehicles rather than a caravan park with cabins, which is also what makes it work for dog travellers: your dog stays in your own van, and Whitsunday Regional Council permits dogs on the site provided they stay on leash and under effective control.

The published conditions are simple and worth following closely because this is a council-run site with rangers who patrol regularly: dogs on leash at all times, immediate pick-up and correct disposal of waste, and no wandering. Because the site is flat, open bays on Main Street rather than a fenced park, there is no off-lead space here at all, so plan the dog's exercise for somewhere else. Waste bins and a free dump point are on site.

The camp and its rules

The park runs seasonally from 1 April to 30 November and closes through the wet summer months. The maximum stay is 48 hours, entry is free, and you register on arrival via the on-site QR code. Vehicles must be fully self-contained; there is potable water to top up tanks, general waste and recycling bins, and public toilets across the road at Pioneer Park. It fills early in season, so arrive before mid-afternoon. Main Street puts shops, bakeries and hotels within a short walk, which makes the evening dog walk easy.

While you are out there

For off-lead time, the Cannonvale Dog Exercise Area is the pick on the drive toward Airlie Beach, and if you push further north the Dog-off-leash Beach at Bowen is the region's proper dog swim. Rufus & Co. Cafe in Airlie Beach is a dog-friendly coffee stop, and if you want powered sites and showers, Discovery Parks - Airlie Beach is the pet-friendly upgrade.

Max: This is a two-night parking bay, not a park. I stay on lead for the whole stop and get my run at Cannonvale when we head toward the coast.
