Louth Bay Campground

Louth Bay Campground is a small council-run campground on North West Terrace at Louth Bay, a quiet coastal hamlet about 25 minutes north-east of Port Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula. Eight flat, allocated sites sit right behind the beach and a short walk from the jetty, and dogs are welcome on leads, which makes this one of the more honest dog-friendly bases on the Lincoln coast.

Dogs at the campground

Pets are permitted in the camping areas under District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula rules and must stay on a lead and under effective control at all times, including on the foreshore. There are no published size limits and no separate pet fee on top of the standard nightly camping fee, which runs around $10 to $20 depending on the current council schedule. Bookings are mandatory and made online through the Eyre Peninsula booking portal rather than on arrival.

Pepsi: there is no fencing at this campground, so the leash rule is doing all the work. Keep the lead clipped on until you are well clear of the road and other sites.

The vibe

This is primitive camping by design. Facilities are a flush toilet block that reviewers consistently describe as clean, plus rubbish bins, and that is the full list, with no showers or power. The trade is a small, calm campground close to the water rather than a caravan park with attractions. Mobile reception is patchy at the campground itself, with reliable signal a short distance away in the township, so download maps before you arrive.

Fires and practicalities

Campfires are banned outright here because of the campground's proximity to the Louth Bay township, so bring a gas stove for cooking. The sites are numbered and allocated rather than first-in, and suit tents, camper trailers and large caravans alike.

Getting there

Louth Bay is reached off the Flinders Highway north-east of Port Lincoln, on sealed roads almost the whole way. Port Lincoln, the nearest supplies, fuel and vet, is about 25 minutes by car, so stock up there before settling in.

Close by with the dogs

The beach and jetty are the main draw: the jetty is a peaceful walk and a known spot for squid and tommy ruffs, and the foreshore sand takes leashed dogs for long beach walks, with visitors also reporting beach driving in places. If you need an off-leash run, the Port Lincoln Dog Park in town is the dedicated fenced option, and a coffee stop at Eyre Roasted fits a supply run.
