Lake Clarendon Campground

Lake Clarendon Campground is a free lakeside rest area on Main Green Swamp Road in the Lockyer Valley, about 11 km from Gatton and an easy hop off the Warrego Highway. Dogs are welcome on lead, which makes it a practical, cost-free stopover for caravanners and motorhome travellers moving through the region with the dog aboard.

Dogs are permitted at no charge with no stated size or breed restrictions, but the leash rule applies everywhere: your dog stays on lead and within your campsite for the whole stay. The lake is a water catchment and the shallows hold significant birdlife, including black swans, so the control requirement is about wildlife protection as much as camper etiquette. Pack out what you pack in, and bring every supply your dog needs because there is nothing on site.

Camping here is rustic and unpowered, with flat ground around the lake taking tents through to big rigs on a first-in basis. Facilities are basic: toilets, picnic tables and shade shelters, with open fires prohibited. The 48-hour limit keeps it a stopover rather than a base, and the farmland-and-water setting earns the reputation for sunsets and birdwatching.

Max: carry your own drinking water, dog food and waste bags, and keep the lead on from the moment you step out of the rig. There are no supplies on site and the birdlife is the reason the leash rule is strict.

Getting there and out with the dog

Turn off the Warrego Highway towards Lake Clarendon and the campground is signposted on Main Green Swamp Road. The dam wall and surrounding quiet country roads give leashed walking when you want to stretch legs beyond the camp. Aim to arrive with daylight to spare so you can assess the ground before settling in.
