Gatton Off-Leash Dog Park

Gatton Off-Leash Dog Park sits inside the Lake Apex precinct off Western Drive, a fully fenced run of almost an acre beside the town's recreational lake. It was the Lockyer Valley's first off-leash dog park and still gives local dogs the most room to sprint in the district.

The dog setup

Dogs stay on the lead until you are inside the fence, then run free under effective voice control. Everywhere else in Lake Apex Park, including the lakeside walking track, is on-lead territory, and Lockyer Valley Regional Council expects owners to keep gates closed and clean up with the bags and bins provided.

Inside there are shaded shelters, benches, a water tap for dogs and bag dispensers. The run is long and narrow rather than a square, which suits dogs that want a proper gallop rather than a tight paddock.

The vibe

The wider precinct makes this more than a dog park stop, with BBQs, picnic tables, a playground, a skate park and the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre with its cafe and toilets nearby. Early mornings and weekday late mornings are quietest, while weekend mornings and the 4pm to 6pm after-work window get busy.

The lakeside ground turns soft after heavy rain, so the fenced area is the reliable option in wet weather, and parts of the precinct are exposed with little shade on summer afternoons.

Max: keep the leash clipped on right up to the inner gate. Dogs come flying at that entry point and a loose lead there is asking for a tangle.

Getting there and parking

The park is at 34 Lake Apex Drive, a few minutes from central Gatton and close to the Warrego Highway, with easy parking around the precinct that can fill during community events.
