Gatton Off-Leash Dog Park

Gatton Off-Leash Dog Park sits inside Lake Apex Park off Western Drive, a fully fenced run of almost an acre next to the town's popular recreational lake. It was the Lockyer Valley's first off-leash dog park and gives local dogs proper room to sprint.

The rules. Dogs must stay leashed until you're through the gate into the fenced area. Once inside they can run off-leash, but owners still need to keep them under effective voice control. Outside the fence, in the rest of Lake Apex Park, dogs must be on a leash. Pick up after your dog using the bins provided.

What's there. The fenced area has shaded shelters and benches, a water tap for dogs, and doggy bag dispensers. The layout is long and narrow rather than a big open square, which suits dogs that like a proper run rather than a tight paddock.

Getting there. The park is at 34 Lake Apex Drive, just off Western Drive and close to the Warrego Highway, a few minutes from central Gatton. Parking is generally easy in the Lake Apex precinct, though it can fill during community events at the park.

Watch-outs. The surrounding lakeside ground can get soft after heavy rain, so the fenced area is the more reliable option in wet weather. In summer, check the ground temperature before a midday visit as parts of the park are exposed with little shade.

Nearby with the dogs. jak & Mo Taste Co on Railway Street is a short drive away for a coffee with outdoor dog-friendly seating, and Gatton Caravan Park has pet-friendly sites if you're staying over.

When to go: early mornings and weekday late mornings are quietest. Weekend mornings and the 4pm to 6pm after-work window get busiest, so aim either side of that if you want the run to yourself.
