Fitzgerald Bay North Free Camping

Fitzgerald Bay North is a free, council-run camping strip on the western shore of Spencer Gulf, roughly half an hour's drive northeast of Whyalla. It sits right on the beachfront, it costs nothing for the site itself, and dogs are allowed to camp overnight with you, which makes it one of the more generous coastal camps on the Eyre Peninsula for van and tent travellers with a dog.

Dogs at the camp

Dogs are permitted to stay overnight on the beachfront sites, but they must be kept on a lead at all times. That rule matters here more than at a fenced park: this is open, unfenced camping shared with other campers, their dogs and shorebird habitat, and owners are expected to clean up after their pets and bin the waste. With no fee for the site, your only budget is what you bring, so pack your own water backup, shade and bedding for the dog.

Worth knowing

This is free camping rather than a caravan park, so there are no rooms, cabins or power. Facilities are basic: flushing toilets are reported on site, along with rubbish bins and free public wifi, but there are no showers at this end of the bay, with the nearest shower and dump point facilities further south towards Point Lowly. The stretch is exposed and frequently windy, so bring hardy shelter for yourself and a windbreak the dog can settle behind. Access is via unsealed coastal roads that are usually 2WD friendly, though they should be checked after heavy rain.

Getting there and what's nearby

The camp sits directly on Fitzgerald Bay with the water close by for a leashed paddle or a walk along the sand and shell shoreline. Fishing and snorkelling are the main draws, and the historic Point Lowly Lighthouse is a short drive down the peninsula. Whyalla township, about twenty to thirty kilometres away, is the nearest stop for supplies, vet care or a cafe break, so stock up before you arrive rather than after.

Close by with the dogs

In Whyalla itself you can pair the camp with the Whyalla Fenced Dog Park for some off-lead time that this beachfront camp cannot offer, or grab coffee and brunch at Blended Cafe on the way through town.
