Freycinet Trail

Out past Whyalla, the Freycinet Trail follows the shore of Fitzgerald Bay towards Point Lowly, a long, flat coastal route over pebble ridges and low dunes. Dogs are allowed, on a lead.

The walk

The full trail runs about 12 km one way on natural ground: packed dirt, sand and pebble tracks with no sealed sections. The shingle ridges along the way are geologically unusual, and the views stretch across the Upper Spencer Gulf.

It is one way, so plan your turnaround and walk back whenever your dog has had enough.

Leads and supplies

Whyalla City Council manages the trail, and dogs stay on a lead along it. The coastal bush here is sensitive, so keep them on the track.

There is no reliable drinking water on the route and almost no shade. Carry plenty of water for both of you, and pack out your bags, since bins are scarce.

Max: Pebbles and sand heat up fast in the Spencer Gulf sun. Check the ground with your hand before a long stretch.

Getting started

Informal roadside parking sits near the trailheads around Fitzgerald Bay and Point Lowly.

Go in the cooler months or early in the day. It suits fit dogs that like a long, steady walk, not dogs that struggle in the heat.
