Guy's Cross Farm Cottage

Guy's Cross Farm Cottage is a self-contained one-bedroom cottage on a working farm at Carwoola, just outside Queanbeyan on the NSW side of the border, about 20 minutes from Canberra. It is the only cottage on the property, so you get the farm to yourselves, and dogs are a genuine part of the deal rather than a grudging exception. Dogs at the cottage

The pet-friendly listing allows up to three dogs of any size, at 20 dollars per pet per night, with pets approved in advance, so mention your dogs when you book. Dogs can be inside the cottage while you are there, and there is a secure dog run with kennel, shade and water next to the cottage for when you head out without them. Bring your own dog bedding; cats are not permitted. Outdoors, the farm is working country, so dogs need to be under control around livestock, and kangaroos move through the property. The farm has walking tracks through olive groves and bush, several kilometres of them, which is the main reason dog owners pick this place over a suburban motel.

Max: a farm with livestock and roos is not an off-lead free-for-all. Ask the hosts which paddocks are safe for a run and keep the lead on anywhere near the animals.

While you're out there

Queanbeyan is ten minutes up the road: Thirty 4 Café and Restaurant on Crawford Street has footpath seating that takes dogs. Over in Bungendore, Flock at the Carrington is a solid lunch stop on the way to the coast.

Close by with the dogs

For a proper off-lead run, Barkley Fenced Dog Park in Googong is fully fenced with separate large and small dog zones and a swimming pond, about twenty minutes away.
