Barkley Fenced Dog Park

Barkley Fenced Dog Park on Duncan Loop is the biggest of Googong's three fenced parks and the only one built around water. Alongside the grass and dirt running space there is a large fenced swimming dam, which makes this the pick of the township for a dog that wants an actual swim and not just a run. Tunnels and agility gear, mounds and open turf give the non swimmers plenty to do while the dam crowd does its thing.

The dog setup

The whole area is fenced and off leash, open 24 hours, with dogs under effective control at all times and wearing a collar with identification. Waste bags are provided at the gate and bins are on site, though bring your own as backup because the dispensers do run out. A fresh water station covers dogs who skip the dam, and there is seating along the edges for owners.

Two practical notes. The dam is the main event but it draws a crowd, so size up the water before you send a nervous or non swimming dog in. And check the fence line as you walk in: local reports mention the odd gap developing along the lower fences over time, which matters if you travel with a determined small dog or an escapologist.

Max: If your dog is nervous around bigger groups or doesn't swim, the dam end gets loud and crowded fast. Stick to the grass side or come back at a quieter time.

Getting there and parking

The park sits at 46 Duncan Loop, reached via Wellsvale Drive and the local street network, with street parking along the frontage and an easy walk from most of the township on Googong's internal footpaths. No dedicated public transport runs to the park itself.

Close by with the dogs

Weekday evenings from about 5:30pm to 7:30pm and weekend mornings are the busiest windows, largely thanks to the dam, so a weekday midday or an early weekend visit is the calmer option. If you want a change of surface, Scentral Bark has the newest facilities and a small dog section, while Rockley is the compact neighbourhood option. Queanbeyan is ten to fifteen minutes away for a coffee stop at Thirty 4 Cafe and Restaurant, which takes dogs outdoors.
