Belmont at Beechworth Beechworth

Belmont at Beechworth is a restored 1895 miner's cottage at 7 William Street, an easy walk from Beechworth's Ford Street shops and bakeries. It takes dogs, but under firm written rules, so it suits travellers with one or two small, house-trained dogs rather than a boisterous pack.

The dog setup

The cottage's Pampered Pooch rules set a limit of two dogs per booking. Dogs must be house-trained and are restricted to the back tiled area only, with no access to the furniture, bedrooms or bathrooms. They must be supervised at all times and cannot be left alone at the cottage; if you head out without them, the policy points you to a local dog-sitting service you can arrange separately.

Clean-up is on you: pick up droppings from the garden, with scented bags provided, and run the vacuum or dust buster over dog hair before you leave. Uncollected droppings or extra cleaning attract a $50 fee. Keep barking in check for the neighbours' sake, and no digging up the lawn or garden.

The vibe

The cottage is done to a comfortable, quiet standard with a private setting close to town, and it works well for couples who want a heritage base in the middle of Beechworth rather than a park or motel. Bring your own bedding and bowls for the dog, and confirm the two-small-dog limit when you book if your dog is on the larger side.

Getting there and parking

William Street sits just off the town centre, so you can park at the cottage and walk to Ford Street, the bakery strip and the historic precinct without moving the car again.

While you're out there

The 2km loop around Lake Sambell is the obvious on-lead morning walk, with the Beechworth Gorge walk as the longer scenic option.
