The Chiton Restaurant

The Chiton Restaurant runs the upstairs level of the Chiton Rocks Surf Life Saving Club on Hindmarsh Esplanade at Hayborough, with the Southern Ocean out one side and the coastline running towards Granite Island. For dog owners the draw is the balcony: leashed dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, and Chiton Rocks Beach sits directly across the road, so a walk and a proper meal fit into the same outing.

The dog setup

Dogs join you on the balcony, on lead, at the outdoor tables rather than inside the dining room. Tripadvisor reviewers regularly mention staff bringing out water and giving dogs a warm reception, though bringing your own bowl is a sensible backup on busy days. The balcony works best with a settled dog tucked into a corner away from the main flow of traffic, because peak services fill the space. Keep in mind the dining room is upstairs in the surf club building, so there are stairs to manage with the lead in one hand. If you are timing a visit around the view, sunset from the balcony is the headline act.

The food and the view

The kitchen leans coastal: seafood platters, fish and chips, fresh flathead and a crab linguine that comes up again and again in reviews, alongside salt and pepper squid and a solid schnitzel. Breakfast runs through to dinner service, with the menu covering morning through to evening from Wednesday to Sunday, and Mondays to mid afternoon. Live acoustic music features on some Friday nights, which is worth knowing if your dog prefers a quieter room.

The address is Lot 440 Hindmarsh Esplanade, Hayborough, a few minutes east of the Victor Harbor town centre. Street parking runs along Hindmarsh Esplanade directly out front, and it is an easy drive or bike ride along the coast from Victor Harbor. Weekend evenings fill fast in summer, so book and mention the dog if you want a balcony table.

While you're out there

Chiton Rocks Beach is across the road for a pre or post meal walk, and Knights Beach is a short drive further along the coast. For a proper off-lead run beforehand, Victor Harbor Fenced Dog Park is the secure option in town.
