Shellys Takeaway is the classic local fish-and-chip shop at Unit 2/130 Island Point Road, St Georges Basin, on the main road through the village. The menu is honest takeaway: fish cocktails, hot chips, potato scallops, squid, steak sandwiches and burgers, in portions that keep turning up as generous in reviews, with lovely staff as a running theme. Hours run 10am to 7pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, with a 7.30pm close on Friday and Saturday. For dog owners it is the easy beach-day feed: order at the counter, settle at the outdoor tables out front, and eat with the dog.

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating and pickup areas directly in front of the shop; inside the counter service area is people only, as you would expect for a takeaway. Keep your dog leashed and settled beside your table, since the footpath area is shared with other customers, and note that Shoalhaven City Council rules prohibit dogs within 10 metres of food preparation or dining areas, so stay clear of the serving window while others are ordering. Water bowls are not guaranteed, so carry your own.

Getting there and parking

Shellys sits on Island Point Road, the main drag through St Georges Basin, roughly 20 minutes south of Nowra. Free street parking and a small car park sit nearby, so a stop is straightforward even with a dog in the back seat.

Close by with the dogs

The St Georges Basin foreshore reserves make a pleasant on-lead stroll after your chips, but do not unclip: the general foreshores and sandy spots around the basin are not off-leash zones under Shoalhaven rules, and shorebird nesting areas along the water are strictly off limits in spring and summer. For a proper run, Clifton Park Fenced Dog Park in Sanctuary Point is the designated 24-hour off-leash option, fully fenced with agility gear and water bowls. Basin Breeze Pavilion - Waterfront Dining is the sit-down option in the same suburb if the occasion calls for it.
