The Corner Shack

The Corner Shack is a casual, family-run cafe at 9/13 Hillvue Road, South Tamworth, working the breakfast-and-burger end of the market from a shopfront near the Oxley Highway approach. The feed is hearty and the prices are famously local-friendly, with a big alfresco area out the side that makes it a genuine sit-down option with the dog rather than a takeaway-and-keep-walking stop.

The dog setup

Dogs join you in the large outdoor alfresco area, not inside. The setup is casual and the staff are used to local pet owners, so a well-behaved dog on a lead is no drama; water bowls are typically available outdoors, and it never hurts to ask staff for a top-up. Take the shaded end of the alfresco on warm Tamworth afternoons and you and the dog will both be happier.

Worth knowing

The kitchen leans big portions at small prices: stacked breakfast rolls with bacon, egg and hash brown, loaded schnitzel burgers, a tandoori chicken pizza, seafood baskets and barista coffee, much of it in the $10 to $15 bracket through their locals menu. Lunch service runs 9am to 3pm Tuesday through Sunday with Mondays off, and the venue's own socials list dinner sessions on weeknights and weekends, so check before planning an evening visit. It is a local spot rather than a tourist one, which is part of the appeal.

Getting there and parking

Hillvue Road runs south out of the Tamworth CBD, and the shop sits handy to the Oxley Highway, so it works as a stop on the way through town. Parking is usually available in the surrounding complex with street parking on Hillvue Road as backup, about five minutes' drive from the Peel River end of the city.

Close by with the dogs

For an off-leash run before lunch, George Street Dog Park on the western side of town gives the dog a proper stretch, and the riverside parks near the Peel are good for an on-leash wander. In the CBD, Humble Espresso and The Pig & Tinder Box cover the dog-friendly ends of breakfast and pub dining respectively.

Mornings are the calmer window for the alfresco, particularly on weekends when the breakfast crowd builds. A dog that settles under a table for a big feed will fit right in.
