The Pig & Tinder Box

The Pig & Tinder Box occupies a restored heritage bank building at 429 Peel Street, right in the thick of Tamworth's main strip. For dog owners the draw is the front verandah and footpath tables, where you can eat with your dog beside you and watch the street go by.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor verandah and footpath seating out front, on a lead and close to your table. The main interior is for human diners only, and the outdoor pet tables are uncovered, so check the weather before you commit. The pet-friendly tables are limited compared with the big indoor room, so request one when you book. Bring a portable water bowl, especially on busy nights.

The vibe

The kitchen is best known for wood-fired pizzas and modern Australian share plates, with pork belly, Korean fried chicken and baked brie among the favourites, backed by a strong cocktail and craft beer list. It trades every day from midday to 9pm and runs lively, particularly on weekends, so the verandah suits a settled dog better than a reactive one. Earlier sittings are the calmer window.

Getting there and parking

On-street parking directly out front on Peel Street is limited; the side streets such as Fitzroy Street and the nearby public car parks are an easy walk. Tamworth's main strip is compact, so most of the town's dining and accommodation is within a short stroll.

Close by with the dogs

The Peel River precinct is the natural walk either side of a meal, and George Street Dog Park in West Tamworth gives your dog a proper run off the lead first. If the verandah is full, Bison Smokehouse & Bar and DECO Wine Bar & Restaurant are the other sit-down options nearby, and Oliver Brown covers coffee the next morning.
