The Watering Hole Tavern

The Watering Hole Tavern is a family-friendly country pub on Olinda-Monbulk Road in Monbulk, given a new lease under recent management. Well-behaved dogs on lead are welcome across its outdoor dining areas, including the heated courtyard, which makes it a year-round stop on a Dandenong Ranges drive.

The dog setup

Dogs are permitted in the outdoor dining spaces and the heated courtyard, on lead and at your table, with no fee. Assistance dogs have full access indoors. Staff will usually bring a water bowl out on request, but packing your own is the safe move, and bring your own treats if your dog needs a distraction. There is no indoor access for regular dogs, so this is a fair-weather-plus-courtyard arrangement rather than a fireside one.

The vibe

Hearty pub meals head the menu, with the chicken parma a fixture, and a specials board worth checking. A large sports bar screens AFL and major events, and weekends bring live music. It is the kind of pub you settle into for a while, which suits a dog that is happy lying under the table. Hours run from 5pm weeknights, midday on weekends, with later closing Friday and Saturday.

Getting there and parking

The tavern sits on Olinda-Monbulk Road (C416), a short drive from the rest of the ranges. There is on-site parking plus street parking nearby, and local bus routes stop near the Monbulk town centre.

Close by with the dogs

The Old Olinda Golf Course dog off-leash area is up the same road, a huge open green space with dedicated off-lead zones, and the Belgrave Lake Park off-leash area is close to Puffing Billy if you are making a day of the ranges. Under Yarra Ranges Council rules, off-lead dogs stay under effective voice control and playgrounds are off limits.

Max: Grab a courtyard table rather than the open footpath tables if your dog is nervous around sports-bar crowds on match days.
