Bang Bang Byron Bay

Bang Bang is a lively Asian-fusion restaurant at 4/1 Byron Street, right in the middle of Byron Bay. It opens from 5pm on weeknights and from midday Saturdays, and the draw for dog owners is the covered balcony: an open-air, shaded perch over the street where dogs are welcome beside you while you work through the curry list.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor dining, and the covered balcony is the spot to ask for: shaded, open-air and good for people-watching over Byron Street. Dogs stay on lead and settled under the table, and indoors is not an option, as with any NSW food venue. Staff are accommodating, but bring your own water bowl rather than waiting for one on a busy night. When booking, note that you have a dog so the team holds an outdoor table for you.

Pepsi: Red duck curry and a happy-hour spritz with the dog flat out under the table on the balcony. It was the easiest dinner of the trip.

The food

The kitchen is known for Thai-leaning curries and stir-fries, with the red duck curry and the beef massaman the standouts, plus a cheap happy hour that fills the room early. It is a sit-down dinner spot rather than a quick in-and-out, so it suits a dog that will settle through the length of a meal.

Getting there and parking

The address is 4/1 Byron Street, a flat walk from most of central Byron Bay. On-street parking on Byron Street gets busy, and the council car parks behind the street are the easier option in peak season, which matters when you are walking in with a dog on lead close to dinner time.

Close by with the dogs

For a pre-dinner run, Belongil Beach's dog exercise area is a short drive west of town. Earlier in the day, Jimmy's Coffee and The Hum both take dogs in their outdoor seating, and Light Years in the Jonson Lane precinct is the other dog-friendly dinner option in the same block.
