Miss Moses Bar

Miss Moses is a neighbourhood bar and bottle shop at 581 Sydney Road, Brunswick, built around an extensive craft beer list, an easygoing local crowd and a plant-filled beer garden out the back. There is often a resident kelpie-labrador named Scout wandering the place, which tells you most of what you need to know about how the bar feels about your dog.

The dog setup

Well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in the outdoor beer garden, which is where you will want to be anyway. As a food-serving venue, dogs stay outside under Victorian food safety rules, and the garden is the whole point here: leafy, casual and social. Water bowls are usually available but carry your own bowl so you are not relying on it. This is a small, intimate garden rather than a sprawling one, so it suits a dog that settles happily next to the table rather than one that needs a perimeter to patrol.

Worth knowing

The drinks list is the draw: a long rotating tap selection of craft beer, an unusual bottle range, natural wines including pet nat by the glass, and the bottle shop next door means you can take something home. Food is unpretentious, chips and snacks, burgers and a Reuben sandwich with a good reputation, plus proper vegan options. Hours run from 4pm Monday to Thursday and from midday Friday to Sunday, so this is an afternoon-and-evening stop rather than a lunchtime default early in the week.

Getting there and parking

The 19 tram along Sydney Road stops nearby, which is the easy way in. Street parking is limited free parking on surrounding residential streets and metered spots on Sydney Road itself that fill quickly on weekends. Calmest visits are earlier in the evening before the garden fills.

Close by with the dogs

Gilpin Park Fenced Dog Park is about five minutes west on Albert Street, a double-gated enclosed space with separate zones for large and small dogs, water taps and shade, which makes it a clean warm-up before a garden session. For a different beer garden on the same strip, the Brunswick Hotel and the Edinburgh Castle Hotel are both dog-friendly pubs further down Sydney Road.
