The Edinburgh Castle Hotel, the local Edi Castle, is a long-standing Brunswick pub on Sydney Road with a big, leafy beer garden and an easygoing crowd. The tree-lined garden is the reason dog owners keep coming back.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the large outdoor beer garden, which has plenty of covered space for rain or shine. You can generally walk the dog through the front bar to reach the garden out the back. Staff are happy to provide water bowls. Keep the dog leashed in the garden, which fills up on music days.

Good to know. A genuine local pub with live music, especially Sunday afternoons, plus a solid menu of burgers and pub staples. It even runs the odd Dog of the Month competition.

Getting there. Easy on the 19 tram along Sydney Road (Dawson Street stop). Limited free street parking on surrounding streets like Hope Street and Davies Street, harder to find at busy times.

Nearby with the dogs. Barkly Square is close for a stroll, and the eclectic Sydney Road strip is good for a leashed wander among the cafes and shops.

Best in the afternoon before live music draws a crowd. Good for a sociable dog that handles a busy beer garden.
