Valentine Dog Exercise Area

Valentine Dog Exercise Area is an open, unfenced grassed reserve at 36 Ruston Avenue in Valentine, where Lake Macquarie City Council permits dogs off-leash around the clock. There are no time-of-day restrictions on free running here, which is the single fact that defines the place.

The dog setup

There is no fencing, so effective voice control does all the work and you must carry a leash at all times. Dogs go back on lead when entering and exiting the reserve along Ruston Avenue, and they stay out of any marked playground zones. Council's off-leash conditions apply, including clean-up after your dog and the exclusion of dangerous and restricted-breed dogs.

Worth knowing

The space is basic: open grass with intermittent shade from surrounding trees, bench seating and waste bins. There is no guaranteed water supply, so bring your own water and a portable bowl, especially in warmer months. It is a quiet, open neighbourhood green space rather than a destination park, and it suits sociable, voice-trained dogs that do not need fencing to stay close. Because the reserve borders Ruston Avenue and residential frontages, keep an eye on dogs that drift towards the street edges.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via the Pacific Highway or Warners Bay Road, turning into Dilkera Avenue and then Ruston Avenue, with street parking on the reserve frontage. Buses along Valentine Road drop you within a short walk.

Close by with the dogs

A short drive towards the lake, Croudace Bay Dog Park at Eleebana adds a fenced alternative if your dog needs containment, alongside the lakeside paths at Thomas H Halton Park. In Warners Bay, Lena's Cafe and Bar and Hippo Espresso both take dogs outside, and Tantarra Bed & Breakfast is the local pet-friendly stay.
