Strathfieldsaye Junior Oval Dog Off Leash Area

Strathfieldsaye Junior Oval is the designated off-leash portion of the Strathfieldsaye Recreation Reserve at 20 Warne Court, a quiet suburban oval option for Strathfieldsaye locals rather than a destination dog park. It is open ground, not fenced, so it suits dogs that come back when called.

The dog setup

Under City of Greater Bendigo rules, the junior oval is off-leash whenever no organised sport, training or scheduled event is using it. The important boundary is the oval next door: the senior main oval at the reserve is not an off-leash area, so keep your dog on lead there. Dogs must stay in sight and under effective voice control, on lead within 10 metres of the playground, and leashed the moment a junior training session or match starts. Greyhounds must stay on lead under Victorian law. Carry bags and use the bins provided.

Worth knowing

The reserve has a playground with a water tap and dog bowl, public toilets, waste bins and netball courts alongside, so it covers most of what you need in one stop. The perimeter of the junior oval makes a flat, easy circuit while the dog runs. Winter weekends see the ground heavily booked by junior sport, and early evenings through the week fill with training sessions, so a weekday morning or mid-afternoon visit is the reliable bet in footy season.

Max: the junior oval and the main oval sit side by side with no fence between them, and the leash rules are different on each. A ball rolling onto the senior oval is not an invitation to follow it.

Getting there and parking

Turn off Strathfieldsaye Road into Warne Court and park on the street by the oval. Local bus services along Wellington Street and Strathfieldsaye Road leave a short walk.

Close by with the dogs

Forage Bendigo in the Strathfieldsaye shopping area has outdoor seating for a coffee after the run, and if you need a fully fenced space, Harcourt Dog Park in Strathdale is the closest dedicated fenced dog park, about 15 minutes back toward Bendigo.
