Harcourt Dog Park is a 3.7-hectare fenced off-leash area at 204 Crook St, Strathdale, on the eastern side of Bendigo. The single reason to make the trip: four small swimming dams set across a roomy, mature-treed block, giving water-loving dogs a proper place to cool off and work off energy behind a secure perimeter.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted within the fenced boundary. Owners must carry a leash at all times and maintain voice control over their dogs. Under Section 27 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994, no greyhound may be exercised off-lead, so greyhound owners must keep their dogs leashed inside the park. Dog waste bags are provided on site, but bring your own as backup and clean up immediately.

The terrain and water. The park's four small dams are the main draw for swimmers, connected by a creek crossed with steel bridges. A bitumen walking track loops through the grounds, and the whole site is well-maintained with plenty of mature, shady trees. The fencing is a secure perimeter, giving reasonable confidence for dogs that tend to roam.

Four dams means you can always move to the next one if the bank is crowded. Pack a towel for the car ride home.

Watch-outs. The dams can have deep areas, so only let your dog in if it is a confident swimmer.

What's there. Beyond the dams and bridges, you get bitumen paths, informal seating areas, and a water fountain available for both people and dogs. On-site parking is available.

Getting there. The park sits roughly 3-4 km from the Bendigo city centre, accessed via Crook St in Strathdale. Public transit runs to Strathdale from the Bendigo CBD if you are without a car.

Nearby with the dogs. For a coffee or a meal on the way through, try The Green Olive or The Golden Bean. If you need a pet-friendly base in the area, Elm Motel in nearby Golden Square is listed in our directory.

When to go. Weekends are busy, with Friday and Saturday mornings the peak. Weekdays are generally quieter, and Sunday and weeknights are the least busy. Head out early on a weekend or try a weeknight for a calmer session.
