A cafe served out of a beautifully restored 1916 tram at Australia's oldest operating tram depot, the Bendigo Tram Cafe is one of the most dog-welcoming stops in town. Dogs are welcome on the alfresco terrace and, remarkably, aboard the vintage Talking Trams themselves.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome on lead in the outdoor alfresco seating around the tram cafe. The standout is that leashed dogs are also allowed on the Vintage Talking Trams, at the driver or conductor's discretion, so the depot makes a genuine dog day out rather than just a coffee stop. Assistance animals are welcomed. Bring your own water bowl for convenience.

Good to know. The cafe serves quick, quality bites and coffee from the restored 1916 tram, with a heritage depot and museum on site covering more than 130 years of tramway history. It is open seven days, roughly 8am to 3pm.

Getting there and parking. Find it at 1 Tramways Avenue. There is on-street parking directly outside the depot, with longer bays along Creek Street nearby. It is an easy walk from the city centre and close to Lake Weeroona.

Nearby with the dogs. Lake Weeroona is minutes away for a scenic on-lead loop, with dog-friendly cafes on its shore, and the historic Alexandra Fountain area is a short walk for a wander.

A tram ride with the conductor's nod is a proper adventure. Pick a quieter weekday so the carriage is calm, and let your dog settle on the floor by your feet before it moves off.

Visit on a quieter weekday for the easiest tram-and-cafe combination. Good for confident, sociable dogs who take new sights and sounds in their stride.
