Black Stump Park

Black Stump Park spreads across large grassed grounds at 17 Baratta Street in Southport, and City of Gold Coast designates part of it as an unfenced off-leash dog exercise area. It is a genuine local's park: no tourist traffic, plenty of open green to work a dog across, and the Southport cafe strip only a few minutes away when the walk winds down.

Leash status and ground rules

The off-leash designation applies to the designated area on the grassed grounds, and it is unfenced, which makes handler attention the whole safety system. Dogs must be under effective control while off leash and returned to lead elsewhere in the park, and the children's playground is off limits to dogs entirely. Because the space is open rather than fenced, it suits dogs with a working recall, and a first visit on lead is the sensible way to read the crowd before unclipping.

What is on site

The large grounds are the draw: room to run a ball line without crowding, mature trees around the edges for shade, and enough space that two or three dogs can work independently at once. There is a playground for the family side of the visit, and the residential setting keeps traffic noise low. It is quieter than the riverside parks closer to the Broadwater, which is exactly why regulars keep it in rotation.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the reliable window: the grounds are empty, the shade is usable and dogs that need space to settle get it. Afternoons after school bring the playground crowd, and weekend middays fill accordingly. Because there is no fencing, an unfocused dog plus a busy park is a poor mix, so build up to the busy sessions. Golden hour visits work well too, since the open grounds hold usable light until late.

The park is on Baratta Street with street parking through the surrounding blocks, an easy distance from Southport's centre.
