Beenak McMahon Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Beenak McMahon Reserve at 2a McMahon Road, Reservoir, is a large open green space of roughly 250 by 120 metres, mostly grass, and it is off-leash around the clock. The size is the whole point: room for ball games, sprint work and high-energy dogs, in a relaxed residential pocket rather than a formal dog park.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies any time, but the council still expects dogs under effective voice control the whole visit. A fenced playground sits on the eastern border and dogs must stay outside it, so plan your throwing direction accordingly. Pick up after your dog; bins are provided, though locals note they fill up, so carry a spare bag. Because the reserve sits in a residential pocket, early morning and late evening visits call for neighbourly noise levels.

Facilities are minimal by design: unshaded perimeter seating, some trees, walking paths and bins. The open expanse means little cover, and there is no reliable dog water tap, so bring your own water and a bowl.

Pepsi: 250 metres of open grass with zero water taps is a summer trap. Freeze a bottle the night before and you both win.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits near the end of McMahon Road with street parking on the surrounding residential streets. It is around 1 to 1.5 kilometres from the Keon Parade rail area, so check current Metro train schedules if you are coming by public transport, though most visits start with a short drive or walk.

Worth knowing

The space is generally well contained by housing, but it is not fenced, so this is a recall ground, not a release-from-responsibility ground. It suits ball-driven dogs and owners who want distance work without dodging crowds; the flip side is zero shade across most of the oval, which makes midday summer visits uncomfortable.

For a bigger outing, Edwardes Lake Park is Reservoir's flagship dog space with water frontage, and Crispe Park is another local off-leash option. Post-run coffee works at Lady Bower Cafe or All Heart Cafe, both with outdoor seating that tolerates a tired dog.
